Example for West Bengal
Three homes share one main meter. They use 450, 300, 180 units in three months on their sub-meters. The stairs lights and the pump use 120 more units. The main meter shows 1050 units, so the West Bengal tariff gives a bill of ₹7,988 in three months, before duty and fuel surcharge.
The three homes pay ₹7,075 of this bill. With one meter for each home, the same units would cost them ₹5,427 in three months. The shared meter costs the homes ₹1,648 more, because all units go into the higher slabs and the free units count only once.
| Home | Units | Fair share | Per unit used | With its own meter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home 1 | 450 | ₹3,704 | ₹7.56 | ₹2,737 |
| Home 2 | 300 | ₹2,588 | ₹7.61 | ₹1,728 |
| Home 3 | 180 | ₹1,696 | ₹7.71 | ₹962 |
Fair share: the common units and the fixed part (₹180) shared equally; the rest by units. Per unit used includes the share of common units. With its own meter: the same units on a separate home meter at the tariff. Free units apply only if each home qualifies for the scheme. The common area is left out: its own connection is often on a different tariff.
How we split the bill
- We price the main meter with the current tariff, or we use the bill amount that you type.
- The fixed part is the fixed charge, the customer charge and the meter rent. We share it equally, or by use if you choose.
- Common units are the main meter minus all sub-meters. We share them equally or by use, or the owner pays for them.
- We share the rest of the bill by units. So every home pays the same average rate for each unit.
- “With its own meter” prices the same units on a separate meter at the tariff. It leaves out duty, fuel surcharge and the cost of a new connection.
Questions
How do I split one electricity bill between tenants in West Bengal?
Read each sub-meter at the same time as the main meter. Find the common units: the main meter minus all sub-meters. Then share the bill by units, and share the fixed charge equally. The calculator does this for you.
Why is the per-unit rate higher on a shared meter?
The West Bengal tariff has slabs: the rate goes up as the units go up. One shared meter adds the units of all homes, so more units fall in the higher slabs. Separate meters keep each home in its own lower slabs.
Can the owner charge a flat rate for each unit?
Some State rules limit what an owner can charge for electricity. We did not check these rules. This calculator shows the fair share at the tariff, so you can compare it with the flat rate.
Can a tenant get a separate meter?
Each discom has its own rules for a new connection in a rented home. Ask WBSEDCL which documents it needs. A separate meter gives the home its own slabs and, if the home qualifies, its own free units.
