Questions
Why does my electricity bill ask for a security deposit?
The discom holds a deposit against a few months of your bills. When your bills go up, the deposit it holds is too small, so it asks for a top-up.
Do I get interest on the security deposit?
Yes, in every state we checked. The rate and the date the discom credits it differ by state.
Is a deposit needed for a prepaid meter?
In the states we checked, a prepaid connection needs no security deposit. Each state page gives the rule.
