How to read your electricity bill

These guides show where to find your consumer number, due date, units and each charge. The explanations come from the sample bill and FAQ of your discom.

  • 12 discoms so far
  • Official explanations only
  • Redrawn samples, no real bills

How we make these guides

Each guide has a new drawing of the sample bill of the discom. If a discom has no usable sample, we draw the layout of a real bill that a reader shared, without any personal details. All figures in the drawing are invented. Each field has a number. We explain a line only if the discom or its regulator explains it. Each explanation links to its document. If no official document explains a label, the guide says so. We do not guess.

We will add more discoms. For some discoms, there is no official sample, or the sample is too old. For these, we use real bills. Can you send a photo of your bill? Cover your name, address and consumer number first. Then contact us.

To check the amount on a bill, use the bill checker. To learn about fixed charges, slabs and fuel surcharge, read how electricity bills work.
