Why is there a security deposit on my Delhi electricity bill?

In Delhi, the security deposit depends on your sanctioned load, not on your bills. Each year the discom reviews your load from last year's maximum demand. If your load goes up, it asks for an additional security deposit.

  • Reviewed every year (load review)
  • Top-up: additional security deposit
  • Prepaid meters: no deposit

Check your deposit

The check runs on your phone. Nothing you type leaves your device.

How BRPL / BYPL / TPDDL reviews the deposit

  • The discom reviews your sanctioned load once a year. The new load takes effect from 1 July.
  • It uses the highest average maximum demand over any four consecutive months of the previous financial year.
  • If your load goes up, the notice gives the enhanced deposit. You pay within 30 days.
  • If your load does not change, you pay no additional security deposit.

If you hold more than needed

  • If your load goes down, the discom adjusts the excess deposit in your next bill.
  • If the refund is more than the bill, it carries the rest to the next bills with interest.

Deposit for a new connection

  • You pay a security deposit per kW of sanctioned load.
  • For a home, the rate is Rs 600 per kW up to 2 kW.
  • Above 2 kW up to 5 kW, the rate is Rs 900 per kW.
  • Above 5 kW, the rate is Rs 1,200 per kW.

Interest and prepaid meters

  • The discom pays interest at the SBI MCLR on 1 April of the year.
  • It adjusts the year's interest in the first bill of the next financial year.
  • The BRPL bill shows the deposit held, the interest and last year's interest rate.
  • You pay no security deposit for supply through a prepaid meter, but some connections pay a separate refundable meter security of Rs 3,000.

On your bill

Your bill shows it as: Security Deposit.

What we could not confirm

  • The order does not say if the slab rate applies to your whole load or only to the kW in each slab.
  • A 2018 amendment appears to charge the additional deposit on the extra load only. We did not capture the exact text.
  • The rules do not say if you can pay in instalments, or what happens if you do not pay.
  • We found no official SBI MCLR figure for 2026-27.
  • We did not check a possible sixth amendment to the Supply Code.
