Questions

Where do the appliance figures come from?

For air conditioners and refrigerators, from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) star-label tables. For everything else, from typical ratings, which you should change to the watts printed on your appliance’s rating plate.

Why does one appliance “add” more than its units times the average rate?

Because the last units you use are charged at your highest slab. Removing an appliance takes those expensive units off first, so “Adds to bill” uses your marginal rate, not the average.

How is an AC’s use worked out?

Its cooling capacity (1 ton is 3.517 kW of cooling) divided by its ISEER, the efficiency figure BEE uses for star ratings. We take the low edge of the star band, so the estimate is on the high side. If you enter the units a year from the AC’s star label, we divide that by 1,600 hours instead.

How is a refrigerator’s use worked out?

From BEE’s maximum yearly energy use for its type, size and star rating (the table in force from 2026), spread evenly over the year. A refrigerator runs all day, so there is no hours field.
