Why the cost differs so much
Your electricity is charged in slabs. An appliance adds its units at the top of what you already use, where each unit costs the most, and in some states it can push the whole bill into a dearer table or past the limit of a free-units scheme. That is why the same appliance costs very different amounts in different states, and in different homes in the same state.
Questions
How many units does a 1.5 ton AC use in an hour?
About 1.227 units for a 3-star split AC on the 2026 label, 0.942 for a 5-star and 1.507 for a 1-star, while the compressor runs at full load. In mild weather an inverter AC runs slower and uses less.
Why is my bill higher than units × average rate?
Because an AC adds its units at the top of your slabs, where each unit costs the most. In some states crossing a slab line also changes the rate on every unit, or ends a free-units scheme.
Is the figure for a new AC or an old one?
For a new AC on the 2026 label. BEE raised the bands in January 2026, so an AC bought before 2026 matches the next star down: a 2024 3-star uses about what a 2026 2-star does.
