Units to heat one tank from cold water to 50 °C
Energy to heat water: litres × temperature rise × 0.001163 units. Cold water in North India in winter is often 10–15 °C; in the South it rarely falls below 20–25 °C.

Extra units a day if the geyser stays on all day (BEE standing loss)
BEE rates geysers by the heat a full tank loses in 24 hours. Switching the geyser off after use avoids most of this.

Why the cost differs so much
Your electricity is charged in slabs. An appliance adds its units at the top of what you already use, where each unit costs the most, and in some states it can push the whole bill into a dearer table or past the limit of a free-units scheme. That is why the same appliance costs very different amounts in different states, and in different homes in the same state.

Questions
Does a 5-star geyser heat water with fewer units?
Heating the water takes the same energy whatever the star rating. The stars show how well the tank keeps the heat, so they matter when the geyser stays on for hours.
Instant or storage geyser?
An instant geyser (3 kW) uses 0.75 units for 15 minutes and loses nothing standing, but it draws more power at once. Storage is better when several people bathe one after another.
