How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “What a home pays” uses the rates after the Government subsidy, as the subsidy orders state them.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • A two-month bill is 2 times these figures. The slabs apply to the units of the whole bill.
  • We read some orders from scanned copies. The table marks these periods.

What we could not confirm

  • For homes that use more than 300 units a month, we found no official table of what they pay. So we show what a home pays only up to 300 units.
  • We could not find the Government notice that started the 300 free units on 1 July 2022. The start date comes from the PSERC order of 2023-24.
  • We read the November 2021 rates of what homes pay from a scanned copy of the PSPCL circular.
  • PSPCL bills most homes every two months, and the slabs double for a two-month bill. We show all bills per month.
  • Our figures do not include the fuel cost surcharge, electricity duty, other State levies or meter rent.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Punjab since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the PSERC tariff went from ₹1,066 in 2015-16 to ₹850 in 2026-27, −20%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 51% after inflation.

Why is what a home pays lower than the tariff?

From November 2021, the Punjab Government paid Rs 2.50 a unit for homes up to 7 kW. Since July 2022, it pays the whole bill for homes up to 300 units a month.

How do the 300 free units work in Punjab?

A home that uses up to 300 units a month, or 600 units in two months, pays nothing. The Government also pays the fixed charge, meter rent and levies. A home that uses more pays for all its units.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
