How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • Some orders do not state a start date. For these we use the order date plus 7 days. The table marks these periods.

What we could not confirm

  • From 2022, each order starts 7 days after the discoms publish a notice in the newspapers. We could not find these notices, so we estimate each start as 7 days after the order date.
  • In April 2016, April 2017, April to May 2018 and April to August 2019, the old tariff stayed until the new order. No order says this.
  • A State scheme, Atal Griha Jyoti, limits the bill for some small homes. We found no official order with its rates, so we show the full tariff only.
  • For higher use, MPERC sets the fixed charge from the units used, not from the connected load. Our standard bill follows this rule.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel cost charge.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Madhya Pradesh since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the MPERC tariff went from ₹1,133 in 2015-16 to ₹1,575 in 2026-27, +39%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 15% after inflation.

When does MPERC change the tariff?

MPERC issues a tariff order for most years, often in March. Since 2022, each order starts 7 days after the discoms publish a public notice.

Does the Madhya Pradesh Government give a subsidy to homes?

Under the Atal Griha Jyoti scheme, a home up to 150 units a month pays at most Rs 100 for the first 100 units. We found this only on a district website.

Why does the fixed charge change with the units I use?

MPERC sets the fixed charge by the units used in the month. For higher use, it charges for a load that it works out from the units, not the connected load.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
