Inverter and battery questions
What size inverter do I need for my home?
Add up the watts of everything that should run together in a power cut, add a 25% margin and divide by the power factor of about 0.8 that Indian brands rate their inverters at. Three fans, six LED lights, a TV and Wi-Fi come to about 400 W, which needs roughly a 650–750 VA inverter.
How many hours will a 150 Ah battery last?
With a 12 V tubular battery at a 400 W load, V-Guard publishes about 2 hours 45 minutes. At lighter loads it lasts proportionally longer, and slightly more than proportionally, because lead-acid gives more of its rated capacity at low current. The calculator uses that published table.
Does an inverter increase my electricity bill?
Yes. Every unit the battery supplies in a power cut is put back from the grid, plus charging losses, and the inverter draws a little standby power all day. Running 500 W through two hours of cuts a day adds roughly 50 units a month. The calculator runs those units through your state’s slabs.
Tubular or lithium battery?
Tubular lead-acid is cheaper and is what most home inverters use. Lithium (LiFePO4) gives more of its capacity, charges faster, needs no water top-up and lasts several thousand cycles, but costs more. Check the inverter supports lithium before switching.
