How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “What a home pays” uses the rates after the Government subsidy, as the subsidy orders state them.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • From July 2024, AERC moved Rs 1.29 a unit of fuel cost into the tariff. Earlier tariffs leave it out, so the chart shows a larger rise than homes felt. We could not confirm if the April 2025 cut took it out again.
  • The State paid a subsidy in most years. But no document states the rate a home paid from April 2016 to June 2024, or in 2025-26.
  • From July 2024, the order does not print one payable rate for each slab. We add its lower fuel surcharge to the 2023-24 rates, as the order describes.
  • In 2015, the State paid Rs 1.01 a unit 'up to 120 units a month'. The order does not say if homes that use more also got it on their first 120 units.
  • From April to July 2015, an order of November 2014 applied. We could not find that order, so we use the rates the 2015 order shows as unchanged.
  • Fuel surcharges are extra. For example, an AERC order of May 2026 adds Rs 0.17 a unit to October 2026 bills. Our figures do not include them or electricity duty.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Assam since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the AERC tariff went from ₹1,154 in 2015-16 to ₹1,442 in 2026-27, +25%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 24% after inflation.

Why is what a home pays lower than the tariff?

The State pays part of the bill for Domestic A homes. In 2026-27 it pays Rs 0.75 a unit on the first 120 units. It also pays Rs 0.99 a unit up to 300 units, and Rs 0.79 for 301 to 500 units.

When does AERC change the tariff?

Most AERC orders apply from 1 April. Three did not: the 2015 order applied from 1 August 2015, the 2017 order from 10 April, and the 2024 order from 1 July.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
