How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “What a home pays” uses the rates after the Government subsidy, as the subsidy orders state them.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • We read some orders from scanned copies. The table marks these periods.

Tariff order

TERC tariff order FY 2026-27: domestic energy charges up 15 to 20 paise a unit, fixed charge raised to Rs 70 per kW

Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) · Tariff Order for TSECL for FY 2026-27 (true-up FY 2024-25, APR FY 2025-26, ARR and tariff FY 2026-27) · order dated 4 May 2026

Energy charges for domestic slabs rise by 15 paise (rural 0-50 units, slab 1, slab 2) or 20 paise (slab 3 and 4). The fixed charge for single-phase homes, billed per kW of load since the 14.11.2025 order, rises from Rs 16 to Rs 70 per kW a month; three-phase (compulsory above 4 kW) is Rs 125 per kW. No separate regulatory surcharge was imposed. Order in force from 1 May 2026.

Government scheme

Tripura Government subsidy of Rs 77 crore continues for FY 2026-27: up to 69 paise a unit off the first 150 units

Government of Tripura, as recorded in the TERC tariff order · TERC Tariff Order FY 2026-27, para 7.10 and Annexure 2 · order dated 4 May 2026

If the State pays the subsidy, homes pay a lower rate on the first 150 units: 0.69 off rural 0-50 units, 0.67 off slab 1, 0.52 off slab 2, nothing on slabs 3 and 4. The subsidy per unit is the same as in the FY 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 schedules, so the net rate paid by a home still rose by 15 to 20 paise. TSECL must bill the full tariff if the subsidy is not paid in advance for two consecutive months.

FY 2026-27 order: FPPPA of at least Rs 0.77 a unit built into revenue; surcharge to be billed monthly under the 2025 Regulations

Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) · Tariff Order for TSECL for FY 2026-27, para 5.15 and 6.1.4 · order dated 4 May 2026

The Commission counted FPPPA income of Rs 0.77 a unit as the minimum for FY 2026-27 and told TSECL to compute the monthly FPPPA under the 2025 Regulations and add any surcharge to the existing FPPPA. The FPPPAS in force each month is a TSECL notice, not in the order; the FY 2026-27 domestic tariff is stated to exclude it.

What we could not confirm

  • The State subsidy applies only when the Government of Tripura pays it in advance each month. We could not confirm that it paid in every year.
  • TERC issued no tariff order for 2015-16 to 2019-20, or for 2021-22. The tariff of the order before stayed in force.
  • The 2014 order says that it is valid until 31 March 2014. This is a misprint for 2015. The tariff stayed in force until 1 September 2020.
  • We read the start date of the 2023 order, 1 October 2023, from a scanned copy.
  • Our bills do not include the fuel and power purchase charge. TSECL adds it to the bill.
  • For May 2026, the fixed charge of Rs 70 a kW comes from a worked example in the order. The example is for a home that uses 330 units. We could not check if smaller users pay less.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Tripura since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the TERC tariff went from ₹1,198 in 2015-16 to ₹1,476 in 2026-27, +23%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 25% after inflation.

Why is what a home pays lower than the tariff?

The Government of Tripura pays part of the bill. It pays Rs 0.67 a unit for the first 50 units and Rs 0.52 for units 51 to 150. Above 150 units, homes pay the full tariff.

When does TERC change the tariff?

TERC kept the 2014 tariff until September 2023. Since 2023, it issues an order each year, but the start month changes.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
