How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “What a home pays” uses the rates after the Government subsidy, as the subsidy orders state them.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • A two-month bill is 2 times these figures. The slabs apply to the units of the whole bill.

TNERC Order 4 of 2026: provisional tariff subsidy for FY 2026-27 continues free 100 units bimonthly for all homes

TNERC (provisional subsidy order, Government of Tamil Nadu) · TNERC Order No. 4 of 2026, dated 27-04-2026 · order dated 27 April 2026

TNERC recorded the State subsidy for FY 2026-27 (Rs 18,293.60 crore allotted in the Budget Estimate). The listed policy directions keep 100 free units bimonthly for all domestic slabs and the multi-tenement common supply (LT IE) rate from 01-11-2023. No FY 2026-27 CPI tariff revision order appears in the TNERC 2026 tariff-orders list checked on 13-10-2026.

TNERC tariff order for FY 2025-26: CPI revision of 3.16%, domestic approved rates up but the State absorbs the increase for homes

TNERC (suo-motu order for TNPDCL) · T.O. No. 6 of 2025 dated 30-06-2025 (effective 01-07-2025); subsidy Order No. 8 of 2025 dated 01-09-2025 · order dated 30 June 2025

Tariffs rose 3.16% (CPI April 2024 to April 2025) from 01-07-2025. For LT IA domestic the Government exempted homes from the hike, so the payable rate stays where it was (for example Rs 2.35 for units 101-200 bimonthly after subsidy). The table is the approved tariff before the Government subsidy.

From 01-11-2023 the common-area supply of certain small apartments (residential, up to three floors without lift) is billed under a new LT IE tariff at a lower rate than LT ID. What we could not confirm

  • No official document states what homes paid from December 2014 to May 2016. The orders give only the subsidy for each unit, so we show no figure.
  • One subsidy order of 2022 prints 450 in the row for homes up to 100 units. This is a misprint: the same order gives 100 units free. We use 0, as the 2023 order prints.
  • The order of May 2026 does not print a full table of what homes pay. We use its rule for the 200 free units, and the rates of the 2025 order above 200 units.
  • TNERC had not issued the yearly rise for July 2026 when we checked on 16 October 2026.
  • The orders do not give the electricity tax rate for homes. Our figures do not include it.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Tamil Nadu since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the TNERC tariff went from ₹830 in 2015-16 to ₹990 in 2026-27, +19%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 27% after inflation.

Why is what a home pays lower than the tariff?

The State pays part of the bill for homes. Homes also get free units: 100 in each two-month bill since 2016, and 200 since May 2026 for homes up to 500 units.

When does TNERC change the tariff?

Since 2022, TNERC can change the tariff on 1 July each year, linked to the price index. The State decides if homes pay the rise.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
