How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • The orders list the slab rates but do not say in words that each rate applies only to the units in its slab. We assume it does. Check this on a bill.
  • Our bills do not include the meter rent. The orders show Rs 20 a month in 2015-16 and Rs 40 a month in 2017-18 and 2022-23. We could not read it for the other years.
  • The 2021-22 order gives its date as 26 February 2021. The SSERC website gives 26 March 2021.
  • We found no fuel surcharge, electricity duty rate or State free-units scheme for homes in the orders.

For 200 units a month, the SSERC tariff went from ₹513 in 2015-16 to ₹730 in 2026-27, +42%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 13% after inflation.

When does SSERC change the tariff?

SSERC issues a tariff order each year. The new tariff usually starts on 1 April. In 2026, it started on 1 July.

Is there a fixed charge in Sikkim?

No. Homes pay for the units they use, plus a meter rent. Since July 2026, a single-phase home pays at least Rs 100 a month.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
