How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • We read some orders from scanned copies. The table marks these periods.

What we could not confirm

  • JERC adds a regulatory surcharge on energy and fixed charges: 4% from 2017-18, rising to 10% from June 2024. Our figures do not include it.
  • We read the 2015-16 order from a scanned copy. We checked its figures against the 2016-17 order, and they match.
  • In 2020-21 and 2021-22, the order prints Rs 40 against up to 100 units and Rs 45 against higher use. We read this as the fixed charge for the whole bill.
  • The orders do not state the billing cycle. We show a monthly bill, because the tariff tables give units a month.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel surcharge.
