How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • We found no NERC tariff order for 2021-22. The 2022-23 order shows the 2020-21 rates as the rates in force, so we show them to 30 June 2022.
  • The orders do not say if the slabs are for a month or another billing period. We use a month.
  • The 2026-27 order says it starts on 1 April 2026, but it lets the Department of Power bill the old rates until 30 September 2026. We show the new rates from 1 October 2026.
  • We could not find the monthly minimum charge in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 orders.
  • If the State does not pay its subsidy for a month, a higher full-cost tariff applies. We show only the subsidised tariff.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel surcharge.
