How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • Some orders set the fixed charge per kVA. For this 2 kW home we take 2 kVA.

What we could not confirm

  • Since April 2025, the fixed charge is Rs 90 a kVA a month. The orders give no rule to change kW to kVA. We take 2 kVA for a 2 kW home, so Rs 180 a month.
  • MSERC issued the 2024-25 order on 24 October 2024, but it applies from 1 April 2024. We could not find how MePDCL billed April to October 2024.
  • Our figures do not include the monthly fuel charge. MeECL publishes it as a percentage each month.
  • Some order dates come from other MSERC documents, not from the signed page of each order.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Meghalaya since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the MSERC tariff went from ₹755 in 2015-16 to ₹1,184 in 2026-27, +57%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 4% after inflation.

When does MSERC change the tariff?

MSERC usually sets a new tariff from 1 April each year. It made no order for 2019-20, so the 2018-19 tariff stayed for that year.

Does the Government of Meghalaya pay part of the bill?

No. The MSERC orders state that the Government of Meghalaya gives no subsidy to any group of consumers.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
