How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • We could not find the MSPDCL tariff order for 2025-26. The MnERC order of 2026 shows that the home rates did not change in that year.
  • The JERC interim order of March 2024 is a scanned copy, and we did not read it. We take the rates for 1 April to 15 June 2024 from the 2024-25 order.
  • If the State does not pay its subsidy for a month, MSPDCL can bill a higher full-cost tariff. We show only the subsidised tariff, and we could not find the full-cost rates for 2026-27.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel surcharge.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Manipur since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the MnERC tariff went from ₹760 in 2015-16 to ₹1,291 in 2026-27, +70%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff rose 4% after inflation.

Who sets the electricity tariff in Manipur?

Until 2024-25, the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for Manipur and Mizoram (JERC) set the tariff. From the 2026-27 order, Manipur's own regulator, MnERC, sets it.

What happens if the State does not pay its subsidy?

Since 2019-20, MSPDCL bills the subsidised tariff while the State pays its subsidy each month. If the subsidy does not arrive, MSPDCL can bill the full-cost tariff for that month.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
