How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

MERC final order in Case 75/2025: FY 2026-27 domestic energy rates cut slightly, wheeling up

From 1 Apr 2026 residential fixed charge stays Rs 130/month; energy falls to 3.96 / 10.80 / 15.03 / 17.53 per unit while wheeling rises to 1.60, so the all-in rate for 0-100 units drops from 5.74 to 5.56 and for 500+ units from 19.15 to 19.13. MERC review order (Case 75/2025): FY 2025-26 domestic tariff effective 1 July 2025

MERC · Case No. 75 of 2025 order dated 25 June 2025; reconfirmed in order dated 25 March 2026 · order dated 25 June 2025

After MERC stayed its 28 Mar 2025 MYT order (Case 217/2024), the 25 Jun 2025 review order set FY25-26 tariffs from 1 Jul 2025: fixed Rs 128 to 130, energy 4.28 / 11.10 / 15.38 / 17.68, wheeling 1.47. The Bombay HC quashed that order on 3 Nov 2025 and the Supreme Court remanded it, but the 25 Mar 2026 order says the same tariff stands and was already being billed.

What we could not confirm

  • Our figures do not include the monthly fuel charge (FAC) or electricity duty. Both are extra on the bill.
  • MERC made a new order on 28 March 2025. A stay on 2 April 2025 stopped it, so the 2024 tariff stayed until 30 June 2025. We could not confirm the bills for early April 2025.
  • The orders of 2025 and 2026 do not repeat the Rs 10 urban fixed charge. We include it, because these orders keep in force all parts that they do not change.
  • From April to May 2015, no single official table gives the home rates. Our history starts in June 2015.
  • The 2025 and 2026 orders show higher rates for 2024-25 than the 2023 order. The difference may be the fuel charge, but no order says so.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Maharashtra since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the MERC tariff went from ₹1,147 in 2015-16 to ₹1,936 in 2026-27, +69%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff rose 3% after inflation.

When does MERC change the tariff?

MERC sets a tariff for several years in one order, with new rates each April. It also reviews the order part way through, for example in 2018, 2023 and 2025.

What is the wheeling charge on my bill?

Since November 2016, MERC adds a wheeling charge to every unit, on top of the energy charge. Our bills include it.

Why did the April 2025 tariff not start?

A stay stopped the MERC order of March 2025 on 2 April 2025. The 2024 tariff stayed. MERC then set a new tariff from 1 July 2025.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
