How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • KSEB bills most homes every two months, but the tariff gives slabs for one month. We could not find the KSERC rule for this. We show all bills for one month.
  • We found no KSERC order that extends the 2017 tariff from 1 January to 31 March 2019. A later order calls it the tariff in force, so we show it.
  • From April to August 2016, no order covered the tariff at that time. In August 2016, KSERC applied the 2014 tariff from 1 April 2016.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel surcharge. Since 2023, KSERC rules add a fuel surcharge each month.
  • The order of December 2024 depends on a case in the Kerala High Court.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Kerala since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the KSERC tariff went from ₹820 in 2015-16 to ₹1,148 in 2026-27, +40%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 14% after inflation.

How does the Kerala tariff work above 250 units?

Up to 250 units a month, each slab has its own rate. Above 250 units, one rate applies to all units of the month. The rate depends on the band of the total use.

Why do your bills show one month when KSEB bills every two months?

KSERC states the slabs and fixed charges for one month. KSEB reads most meters every two months. We show the bill for one month of use.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
