How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • We read some orders from scanned copies. The table marks these periods.

What we could not confirm

  • The KERC order of 2021 is a scanned copy. We took its rates from the KERC press note and from the 2022 order.
  • We do not show what a home pays under Gruha Jyothi. The free units depend on each home's past average use.
  • Since April 2025, homes also pay a separate charge for staff pension: Rs 0.36 a unit in 2025-26 and Rs 0.35 in 2026-27. Our figures do not include it.
  • Our figures do not include the electricity tax or the monthly fuel charge.
  • We found no new KERC order for 2026-27. The rates come from the 2025 order, which sets three years.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Karnataka since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the KERC tariff went from ₹961 in 2015-16 to ₹1,460 in 2026-27, +52%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 7% after inflation.

What is Gruha Jyothi?

Gruha Jyothi is a scheme of the Government of Karnataka. From August 2023, it gives eligible homes free power up to 200 units a month. Each home's limit depends on its past average use.

When does KERC change the tariff?

KERC usually sets a new tariff from 1 April each year. The 2025 order sets the tariff for three years, from 2025-26 to 2027-28.

Why did bills at 100 units rise in 2024?

In 2024, KERC removed the cheaper rate for homes up to 100 units. All units now cost one rate, so small users pay more and large users pay less.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
