How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • The orders up to 2018 do not say if the rate above 200 units applies to all units or only to units above 200. We charge it only on units above 200.
  • The State Government gives a subsidy to some homes as a deduction in the bill. We did not find the rate for each unit in an official document.
  • JSERC orders refer to free electricity for homes up to 200 units under the MUKY Yojna. We did not find the rule or its start date in a readable official text.
  • Our figures leave out electricity duty and the fuel cost adjustment.
  • This page shows the JBVNL tariff only. It does not cover areas that other licensees supply, for example JUSCO (Tata Steel) and DVC.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Jharkhand since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the JSERC tariff went from ₹520 in 2015-16 to ₹1,580 in 2026-27, +204%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff rose 86% after inflation.

Is electricity free for homes in Jharkhand?

JSERC orders refer to free electricity for homes using up to 200 units under the MUKY Yojna. We did not find the official rule, so the chart shows the full tariff.

Why did the tariff rise so much in 2018?

JSERC removed the slabs and set one rate of Rs 5.50 a unit for urban homes. JSERC states that it set this tariff without State funding to cover the gap.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
