How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.

What we could not confirm

  • GERC prints the slabs per month. We did not find an official rule for bills that cover two months.
  • The schedule says 'first 50 units, next 50 units' and so on. We read this as each rate applying only to the units in its slab.
  • Our figures leave out the fuel and power purchase cost adjustment, which homes pay per unit on top of the tariff. They also leave out electricity duty.
  • We did not find a Gujarat Government subsidy or free-unit scheme for urban homes.
  • We opened only the DGVCL orders. GERC states that the same schedule applies to MGVCL, PGVCL and UGVCL.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Gujarat since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the GERC tariff went from ₹778 in 2015-16 to ₹758 in 2026-27, −3%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 40% after inflation.

Why has the Gujarat home tariff not changed since 2019?

GERC kept the home rates in every order from 2019-20 to 2026-27. Bills still change, because the fuel and power purchase cost adjustment changes during the year.

Is the tariff the same for all Gujarat discoms?

Yes. DGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL and UGVCL use one common GERC schedule for homes.

Do homes with a prepaid smart meter pay less?

Yes. From 1 April 2026, they pay Rs 2.96 a unit for the first 50 units, against Rs 3.05. They also get 60 paise a unit off from 11:00 to 17:00.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
