How we work it out

  • One home: urban, single phase, 2 kW. It uses 100, 200 or 300 units a month.
  • The bill is energy charge plus fixed and customer charges, from the tariff in each order. It does not include electricity duty, tax or fuel surcharge.
  • “In today’s rupees” uses the consumer price index of MoSPI (all India, general). We use the average of the months of each financial year. For 2026-27 we use April to September.
  • A two-month bill is 2 times these figures. The slabs apply to the units of the whole bill.

What we could not confirm

  • The orders before 2021 do not say if each slab rate applies only to the units in that slab. We assume it does.
  • We could not confirm if CPDL bills each month or every two months. The orders give slabs per month, and they double for a two-month bill.
  • The 2025 order gives a rate for each year. We found no sentence that gives 1 April 2026 as the start of the 2026-27 rates.
  • From April 2018 to May 2019, bills also had a regulatory surcharge of 5%. Our figures leave it out.
  • Our figures do not include electricity duty or the fuel surcharge.

Questions

How much has the electricity tariff gone up in Chandigarh since 2015?

For 200 units a month, the JERC (Goa & UTs) tariff went from ₹569 in 2015-16 to ₹730 in 2026-27, +28%. Prices in general rose +63% in that time, so the tariff fell 22% after inflation.

Who supplies electricity in Chandigarh?

The Electricity Department of UT Chandigarh supplied homes until January 2025. From 2019 it had the name Electricity Wing of the Engineering Department. Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) supplies them since 1 February 2025. JERC sets the tariff.

How often does a Chandigarh home get a bill?

The Electricity Department billed homes every two months. For a two-month bill, the slabs and fixed charges double.

Are electricity duty and fuel surcharge in these figures?

No. The figures show energy, fixed and customer charges only. Your bill also has electricity duty or tax, and a fuel surcharge in most months.
